About us News MEET THE NEIGHBOURS: Summer to encourage and empower young people Meet Summer Knight Summer is one of HBNC's new Youth Events Advisors! Summer has joined the new Youth Events Team Initiative (YETI) and is passionate about supporting and empowering youth. Let's learn a little about Summer! Tell us a bit about yourself? My name is Summer Knight. I’m a 21-year-old Aboriginal woman who grew up in Maryborough. I love spending time with my family and enjoy outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, crabbing, and camping. What is a quick summary of your professional background? I have previously worked in childcare and as a teacher aide, holding a Certificate III in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education. I completed a traineeship with DATSIP, where I earned a Certificate III in Community Services. I currently work in Residential Youth Care and also as a support officer for the Johnathan Thurston Academy (program work). What drew you to work with HBNC? HBNC’s values align with my own desire to help the community as much as possible. This role gives me the opportunity to learn more skills in a field I’m passionate about and support youth in another way. How do you see your role making a difference in the lives of the community’s most vulnerable? I hope to bring young people together in the community to feel connected and combat loneliness, as well as give them a voice. I want to ensure that anyone feeling vulnerable has a safe space and a sense of belonging. What’s one thing you hope to see happen or change for our community? I’m fortunate to be in this role, as I would like to see more support and events for youth in the community. I also want to encourage and empower other young people to become leaders and have a voice.
