A Decade of Determination - CEO Tanya Stevenson A Message from our CEO - Tanya Stevenson Ten years ago, I walked through the doors of the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre. As I reflect on that journey today, I know that none of what we have achieved during this time belongs to one person. It belongs to thousands of volunteers who have generously given their time to create kindness in our community. It belongs to staff members who believed people deserve more than a service, they deserve dignity and hope. It belongs to every Board member who had the courage to back ideas that, at the time, felt a little too ambitious. Over the past decade, together we have transformed HBNC into something much more than a neighbourhood centre. Together, we created the Neighbourhood Hive, where young people come to learn, connect and discover new possibilities. Together, we opened the Urangan Community Wellness Centre, creating a place where health and community walk hand in hand. Together, we embraced social enterprise through initiatives like The Wandering Teapot, proving that business can be a force for social good while creating pathways into employment, confidence and connection. Together, we built Christmas Lights Wonderland into one of the Fraser Coast's most loved community events, not just because of the lights themselves, but because thousands of people came together to create moments of joy for complete strangers. Every one of these achievements has been powered by people. Along the way, we have learned that the most valuable resource in any community is not funding, buildings or programs. It is people. People who care enough to show up. People who quietly share their skills. People who encourage others when life feels overwhelming. People who change lives without ever expecting recognition. One of the greatest privileges of my career has been leading alongside these remarkable people. One of my greatest personal honours was for this decade was receiving the Social Impact Leadership Australia (SILA) Scholarship, every lesson I brought home has only had value because our team has been willing to turn ideas into action. Social innovation has never been about one person having all the answers. It has always been about creating a culture where everyone is invited to imagine what is possible. When I look back over the past ten years, I don't think first about the projects or the milestones. I think about the conversations in the hallway. The stories of lives changed for the better. The staff staying late to make sure someone was safe. The excitement of delivering new community initiatives. The difficult days when we held each other together. The quiet celebrations when someone found work, bought their first car, made a friend, secured a home, rebuilt their confidence or simply smiled again. These are the moments that define HBNC. Perhaps the greatest measure of success has not been organisational growth but community impact. Today HBNC creates more than $123 million in measurable social value, supported by hundreds of volunteers contributing almost 20,000 hours each year. Every conversation, every shared meal, every volunteer hour and every act of kindness contributes to something much larger than ourselves. As CEO, I may have helped shape the direction, but it is our staff, volunteers, Board members, partners and community who have built the organisation that exists today. Thank you for believing in big ideas, for embracing change, for giving your time so generously and for reminding me, every single day, what community truly looks like. Communities are not built by organisations. They are built by ordinary people who choose to care for one another. So, as we celebrate this milestone, I don't simply celebrate ten years. I celebrate ten years of kindness, courage and imagination. And most of all, I celebrate ten years of people choosing to build a better community together.
