Why are we seeing Flying Foxes in Hervey Bay?

Join us at The Neighbourhood Centre with educator John Parsons for an engaging and educational workshop exploring the fascinating world of flying foxes and microbats, and the vital role they play in keeping our ecosystems healthy.

Often misunderstood, flying foxes are some of Australia’s most important pollinators of the night. As they travel between flowering trees, they carry pollen over vast distances, helping native forests regenerate and supporting the eucalypts, melaleucas and other flowering plants that many Australian animals depend on. They also disperse seeds, helping to restore and maintain healthy bushland.

Through a visual presentation, hands-on learning and real-life examples, you’ll discover:

• The unique biology and behaviour of flying foxes and microbats.
• Why flying foxes are known as the pollinators of the night and why they are essential for healthy forests.
• How microbats provide natural pest control by consuming thousands of insects each night.
• The local bat species found across the Fraser Coast.
• The conservation challenges these remarkable animals face.
• Simple, practical ways you can create bat-friendly habitats and support local biodiversity.

This event is part of Night Studio, HBNC's after-hours learning program for adults. Night Studio offers practical, engaging workshops designed to help you build skills, explore new ideas, and connect with others in a supportive environment.
