Individual strategies to prevent elder abuse

  • Don’t leave it until it’s too late. Plan for the future when you are well, healthy and independent.
  • Stay connected to the community! Seek a wide range of social networks beyond your immediate family.
  • Avoid making important decisions following a significant event in your life.
  • Don’t sign anything you don’t understand.
  • If you have not had a positive relationship with family members, don’t assume it will improve if they move in with you- or you with them.
