Meet Bernie Williams

Bernie is one of HBNC's new Youth Events Advisors! Bernie has joined the new Youth Events Team Initiative (YETI) and is passionate about seeing opportunities for young people to thrive in our community.

Let's learn a little about Bernie!

Tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Bernie Williams. I am a proud Aboriginal and South Sea Islander man. I am originally from Innisfail north Queensland and have been living locally for the last 14 years. I am very family-oriented and love spending time with family and friends. I love playing sports, as well as socialising and getting to know people.

What is a quick summary of your professional background?

I am currently as a youth support officer for the Johnathan Thurston academy and I also work in the disability field as a support worker, as well as currently working at the HBNC as a youth events advisor.

What drew you to work with HBNC?

I was drawn to work with HBNC as I was volunteering to help and participate in the Bay Alley event that had been run in the community earlier this year. I enjoyed being part of the HBNC team and getting more involved in the community. I had heard that a role had been advertised so I applied and luckily got the opportunity to be part of the team as a youth event advisor.

How do you see your role making a difference in the lives of the community’s most vulnerable?

My role will help make a difference as myself and the team will be able to provide support to the most vulnerable in ways such as support with mental health awareness, plus providing advice and food, all at events. Our events will help bring people closer to the community, family or friends while giving them a positive outlook on life.

What’s one thing you hope to see happen or change for our community?

I hope to see our community coming together and supporting one another.
