The Urangan Community Centre has long been a place that nurtures SAFE AND CONNECTED COMMUNITIES.
The Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre has been managing the Urangan Community Centre on behalf of the council since 1997. It has been home base for a range of wellness activities over the years, including the Red Apple Program and Focus on Friendship group. That's why it makes sense for this vital community hub to be expanded to become a wellness centre.

HISTORY OF URANGAN CENTRE

The Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre has been managing the Urangan Community Centre on behalf of the Hervey Bay City Council and latterly the Fraser Coast Regional Council since 1997.

The Centre has been used as the base for a range of wellness activities over the years.  The Bays’ over 50s Living Dangerously Group (BOLD) provided opportunities for seniors to try activities that took them out of their comfort zone.  These have included jet-skiing; banana boating; canoeing; high ropes courses; horse riding and go-karting.

The Focus on Friendship Group met monthly for social activity, enjoying many performances by Hervey Bay entertainers as well as great food!  Lasting friendships were forged during these times.

The Red Apple Program provided information on healthy eating and activities, showing families how easy it was to prepare well-balanced meals.

The ‘Jolly Dollies’, a group of war widows, met there regularly to catch up with each other and enjoy a morning of activities together.

As well as this, a large number of Hervey Bay families have celebrated major life milestones – birthdays, weddings, wakes – at the Centre.

In 2011, the Briggs and Mortar ‘Social Infrastructure Needs Assessment’ conducted for the Fraser Coast Regional Council noted that the Centre ‘is cramped for space and requires expansion’.  Finally, in 2020, we are pleased that the required expansion is going ahead!
